Getting Around

Back to Cayman Art and Culture    |    More on Cayman Islands Transportation

Whether you prefer to walk, drive your own vehicle or take the public transportation, it is very easy to get around the Cayman Islands.

ON FOOT

Taking the time to get from one place to the next is a great way to enjoy the Cayman Islands. Not only is it fun and healthy but also allows you to meet local people along the way and brings you close to the tastes, smells and sounds of the island, especially along the waterfront.

CAR RENTAL

Renting a vehicle for at least part of your stay is often the easiest and most economical way to get around, especially if you plan to explore. You will require a temporary driver’s license, which is obtained at any car rental agency by presenting a valid driver’s license and paying a US$7.50 fee. You must be 21 or over to rent a vehicle, 25 at agencies. Insurance policies of some rental agencies do not cover drivers under 25. Remember that driving is on the left side throughout the Cayman Islands. Most vehicles are righthand drive; most 4x4’s have left-hand stick shift.

Taxis are available at Owen Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman and offer a fixed rate per vehicle or per person to all points on Grand Cayman. Taxis are also available from all resorts and from the taxi stand at the cruise ship dock in George Town. A sign with current rates is posted at the dock.
